The Markaz
The Markaz (literally "the center"), originally The Levantine Cultural Center, was a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, which existed from 2001 until 2020. It offered artistic and educational programs focusing on the Middle East and North Africa, with classes and workshops for ethnic communities. History The center was founded in 2001 by a group of activists, artists and business professionals. Its original name was Levantine Cultural Center, but it changed its name to The Markaz at the end of June 2015. It presented artistic, educational, and outreach programs related to the Middle East and North Africa regions. The organization lost 501(c) organization#501.28c.29.283.29, 501(c)(3) status on April 15, 2014, for failing to file Form 990s for three consecutive years. The center was closed in May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the organization instead founded an online journal, ''The Markaz Review''. Markaz, Hungary
Markaz is a village in Heves County, Hungary, under the in the Mátra mountain ranges. As of 2022 census, it has a population of 1698 (see Demographics). The village located 13.8 km from (Nr. 85) Vámosgyörk–Gyöngyös railway line, 10.3 km from the main road 3 and 18.1 km from the M3 motorway. The closest train station with public transport in Gyöngyös. History The name of the village is first mentioned in the 1332-37 papal tithe list. The name of the settlement was probably named by the Kabars, who called it as center (''markaz''). However the old church of the village, was St. Mark's church. The first well-known owners of the village were the Kompolti family, who built a castle on the hill above the village. In 1522 the became the landlord, but in 1544 the Ottomans destroyed the castle and the population fled. The remains of the castle are still visible to this day.
